Growing up, I used to feed my cats whatever I found at the grocery store. Not much though given to the quality. Being a poor college dropout, I really didn't have much spare cash. What I did have, I usually kept in reserve, for beer, and more beer. Everything else went to seeing live music, or buying cds and albums. So for the most part, I was buying the cheapest pet food out there. I thought all food would be about the same quality, no big deal. But it really is like feeding a human, Mcdonald's every day of their life. One of my cats, needed surgery. He developed crystals in his urine. Very painful. Poor guy. And it was my fault! Too much cheap cat food. Now I know better. Try to stay away from whole grains, and meat by-products. Carbs are not great for cats also. To keep it simple, the more protein the better. I understand, many of the cat brands contain some non- protein ingredients. But for a general rule, buy the most protein heavy brand you can find. Also keep their water fresh, and change out every day. I understand if you cannot afford, some of those elite foods. Just do your best, and look out for your cat, and his long term health. I know we all want to have our wonderful felines around us as long as possible!
